Kim Jong appointed acting chief of North Korea military
A relatively young general has taken over as acting chief of North Korea's all-powerful military, heralding a generational shift, a leading South Korean expert said on Tuesday.
General Kim Jong-Gak is acting for Vice Marshal Jo Myong-Rok, ailing chief of the army's powerful General Political Department, Kweon Yang-Joo, a senior analyst at Seoul's state-run Korea Institute for Defence Analyses said.
"Kim Jong-Gak, 61, is a relatively young figure in the North's hierarchy, and his rise to power heralds a shift in generation," Kweon said.
"If Jo dies, Kim Jong-Gak is likely to be appointed as head of the general political department, which is seen as the North Korean army's most influential body," he said.
